What is a Doula?

What is a Doula!?

A birth doula is a trained and experienced (non medical) professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during, and just after birth. A Doula supports you and your partner by providing the knowledge, comfort, and education necessary for fulfilling your birth experience. The following techniques may be used but not limited to:

  • massage
  • breathing techniques and vocalization
  • assist in finding your Rhythm, Relaxation & Ritual
  • counterpressure
  • visualization
  • relaxation
  • tools for comfort
  • positioning & other fundamental materials needed for mothers
  • education and advocacy

Doula support, gives mom’s partner a greater sense of relaxation, and therefore an increased ability to care for the mother-to-be on an emotional level.

Why a Doula!

Benefits:

Clinical studies show the benefits of working with a birth doula include:

  • 50% reduction in cesarean rates
  • 25% reduction in the length of labor
  • 60% reduction in the rate of epidural use
  • 40% reduction in the need for forceps
  • higher breastfeeding rates

Other benefits include:

  • higher levels of confidence in partners as coaches
  • increased maternal sense of satisfaction in the birth
  • overall sense of well-being following delivery

*Studies have shown that when Doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

I think Bump. Baby. Bliss. is amazing!!

Courtney was my Doula for my 3rd baby. My husband initially wasn’t really excited about the idea of having someone else in the room when our baby was born, and didn’t see the need for a doula since our previous 2 deliveries had gone well.

Well he has since changed his tune. After the birth of baby Kenzee he said “having a doula was vital to a natural birth”. He didn’t feel like she took away from our “special moment” at all. I think it was really helpful to him to not have all of the pressure of helping me cope with my labor pains as well as having someone to give him a break.

Courtney encouraged me to use different techniques to help progress labor. She helped me to remind the nurses of my birth plan. And she broke out the uno cards when it was necessary!!

I thoroughly appreciate her and recommend her to anyone having a baby!

Courtney has been advising me with breastfeeding and this has been a great experience! I always knew I wanted to breastfeed my baby because I heard of all the benefits but I wasn’t sure how successful I would be. I have always had a ton of questions about maintaining a good milk supply and relied on different people and their experiences!

It wasn’t until my baby got sick and he wasn’t drinking as much milk as usual. When doing my normal routine of pumping I realized my milk supply decreased. I instantly got worried and thought my breastfeeding had come to an end.

So I remembered seeing Courtney posting different things about pregnancy and breastfeeding and decide to inquire about her services. I said all that to say once I contacted her and started Lactation consultations my milk supply got back to normal within a week or two of following all of her recommendations! She recommended some things and helped me develop a plan to get my milk supply up. She communicated with me very well especially with me being long distance in Virginia. I’m so thankful for her, my milk supply is back up to normal.

Courtney’s services prior to, during and after the labor and delivery of our first child exceeded our expectations! With her support, my husband and I were able to have the unmedicated, natural birth we planned for. I have every intention of securing her as our doula for any future pregnancy!
